A compilation of basic information, exercises, techniques, and repertoire for the beginner. Lessons progress from the simplest manual exercise to the playing of three- and four-part contrapuntal compositions.
Much attention has focused on organ performance practice prior to the late 19th century. One might say that today we have "two practices" in our approach to the instrument. The concept of smooth legato playing wherein tone follows tone with no silence in between, as was stressed in the French Romantic school, is perhaps the keyboard approach most different from that with which a pianist might approach the organ. These materials are presented first, having been selected from compositions of the 19th century. Repertoire from the 17th and 18th centuries, teaching concepts of the earlier and more articulate manner of playing, follow in the latter part of the book.
