Based on the score edited and published by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach in 1779, this work is written for two four-part vocal groups, a "chorus of angels" and a "chorus of nations," which were probably placed in different parts of the church. Evidently the composer had a smaller sound body in mind for the chorus of angels, as he had it at first accompanied by strings only, while full orchestra, including oboes, trumpets, and timpani, supports the chorus of the nations. In order to bring the contrast between the two vocal groups into full relief, the parts of the angels can be sung by solo quartet. English and German texts available.
