Dr. James (Jim) Voelz
A lifelong member of The Lutheran Church-Missouri-Synod (LCMS), Jim is the Chair and Professor of Exegetical Theology at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. Prior to joining the faculty of Concordia Seminary in 1989, Jim served on the faculty of Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne from 1975 to 1989. Intentionally engaged in the wider church and scholarly world for over than three decades, Jim has been active in the Society of Biblical Literature since 1977, serving on steering committees of various subgroups (e.g., Literary Aspects of the Gospels and Acts, Mark), and presenting papers regularly on a wide range of topics. In 1984, he was invited to membership in Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas, the international New Testament society, and he has regularly presented papers in both the hermeneutics and New Testament Greek grammar seminars there, each of which he has, in turn, also co-chaired since 1991. Within the LCMS, he is a member of many study groups and commissions, and is a frequent presenter at pastors and church workers conferences. Jim has authored three books with CPH and dozens of articles in the area of hermeneutics and Gospel studies, and Greek grammar. He holds these degrees: B.A., Concordia Senior College, Fort Wayne, Indiana M.Div., Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri Ph.D., Cambridge University, Cambridge, England Post-Doctoral Study University of Basel, Switzerland (Prof. Bo Reicke), 1982/83 University of Oxford, England (Prof. G. B. Caird), 1983 Jim has been involved in sports throughout his life, beginning with tennis and basketball, and continuing with soccer and golf. He has coached these four sports at Concordia Seminary (soccer and basketball also at CTS Fort Wayne) and was inducted into the sports hall of fame at Concordia University Wisconsin in 2003 for his contributions as both a player and a coach. When not teaching, writing, or playing sports, Jim enjoys contract bridge and leading the Concordia Wine Society at Concordia Seminary. He has been married to his wife, Judy, since 1977.
