Based on the text Luke 2:10–12, 14; composed by Andreas Hammerschmidt and edited by Harold Mueller, "O Beloved Shepherds" is designated for use on Christmas. The text is taken from the Christmas Gospel and used in this musical setting of the angel's announcement to the shepherds. The seventh stanza of Vom Himmel hoch (Luther) is interpolated in the setting, but with an original melody rather than the traditional chorale tune.
