This setting of the St. John Passion by William Byrd and edited by Paul Thomas, consists of the narration set to traditional Passion tones for chanting by the Evangelist, Jesus, and Synagoga (the name for the person who reads or chants the parts of the other characters in the Passion) and the voices of the crowd set by Byrd for singing by choir. In this edition the English translation is that of the Revised Standard Version of the Bible adapted to Byrd's music.
