Ancient precedent would bar those under thirty from reading the Song of Songs. While Mitchell doesn’t take so firm a stance in this commentary, he does acknowledge that the Song is one of the most difficult scriptural books to interpret. Read intertextually with Ephesians 5:21-33, Christ’s wedding parables, and New Testament nuptial imagery, Mitchell’s translation understands the lovers in the song in relation to the holy estate of human marriage and the divine mystery of Christ’s union with his bride the church, using a robust hermeneutic and incorporating insights from early church fathers and orthodox Lutheran theologians. Solomon’s most beautiful poem contains a profound message of divine love, eschatological yearning, consummation, and eternal delights, with rich applications for the life of the church and all Christians.

Endorsements

As one might imagine, given its length, it is an understatement to describe Mitchell's 1,300 page commentary on the Song of Songs as a "thorough treatment of his subject." Within its 1,300 pages, Mitchell covers every topic in relation to the Song one might possibly conceive of, and quite a few that most people would not have thought of at all. Because of its comprehensive nature, any pastor who reads through this commentary will learn something helpful for his own ministry.

Rev. Dr. Timothy E. Saleska, Professor of Exegetical Theology at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis in Concordia Journal (October 2006)

About the series

The Concordia Commentary Series: A Theological Exposition of Sacred Scripture is written to enable pastors and teachers of the Word to proclaim the Gospel with greater insight, clarity, and faithfulness to the divine intent of the Biblical text.

The series will cover all the canonical books of the Old and New Testament, with an original translation and meticulous grammatical analysis of the Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek of each text. The foremost interpretive lens centers on the unified proclamation of the person and work of Christ across every Scriptural book.

The Commentary fully affirms the divine inspiration, inerrancy, and authority of Scripture; Each passage bears witness to the confession that God has reconciled the world to Himself through the incarnation, ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension of Christ His Son.

Authors expose the rich treasury of language, imagery, and thematic content of the Scripture, while supplementing their work with additional research in archaeology, history, and extrabiblical literature. Throughout, God’s Word emanates from authors careful attention and inculcates the ongoing life of the Church in Word, Sacrament, and daily confession.
