Exquisite choral writing characterizes this heartfelt, plaintive prayer to preserve one’s faith. The text is a free adaptation of Paul Gerhardt’s hymn “Oh, Enter, Lord, Thy Temple.” This SATB a cappella anthem is useful any time during the Church Year.
Spirit, let me know Thee and feel Thy pow’r within,
the pow’r that breaks my chains
and rescues me from sin.
Thy gift is faith, O Spirit;
true hope and joy are surely mine.
In darkest hours Thy holy comfort doth ever brightly shine.
Oh, how oft Thy holy voice hath shed its sweetness over me.
Oh, how oft Thy holy voice hath opened heav’n before me
and bid my heart rejoice.
May I live and may I die with spirit calm and spirit fearless,
and after death
may I inherit eternal life on high,
may I inherit eternal life.
